[Asia Economy Reporter Kwanju Lee] Severance Hospital Dermatology Skin Cancer Clinic announced on the 26th that it has surpassed 4,000 cases of 'Mohs micrographic surgery (Mohs surgery),' the first single hospital in Korea to achieve this milestone.
The 4,000th patient, Ms. A (66, female), was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma on the medial canthal area of her right eye. After hearing that extensive excision surgery could cause functional and cosmetic issues with her eye, she visited Severance Hospital Skin Cancer Clinic. Ms. A underwent Mohs surgery performed by Professor Kyungyang Jung in the dermatology department, completely removing the cancer and was discharged in good health without any functional or cosmetic problems with her eye.
Mohs surgery is a procedure where skin cancer cells are completely removed under a microscope before suturing, making it the surgery with the highest cure rate for skin cancer. Severance Hospital Dermatology Skin Cancer Clinic began performing Mohs surgery in July 2000, reaching 1,000 cases in 2013, 2,000 cases in 2017, 3,000 cases in 2020, and surpassed 4,000 cases within two years, solidifying its global standing.
As a world-leading institution in Mohs surgery, Severance Hospital Skin Cancer Clinic is leading the field of skin cancer treatment by proposing more advanced treatment methods. They were the first in Korea to apply Mohs surgery, which was mainly used for basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, to skin melanoma, and have also applied it to various rare skin cancers such as nodular dermatofibrosarcoma, extramammary Paget's disease, and Merkel cell carcinoma.
Skin cancer can generally be treated with wide excision, cryotherapy, or radiation, but due to high recurrence rates, Mohs surgery, which traces and removes the root of the skin cancer completely, is recognized as the international standard treatment. In terms of scarring, Mohs surgery minimizes scars by excising the surrounding normal skin as little as possible. It is an optimized surgical method for the facial area, where skin cancer most frequently occurs.
