This 'North and South Korea Cancer Terminology Dictionary' was planned to facilitate communication between medical personnel in North and South Korea and to enable effective cancer diagnosis and treatment in medical settings for North Korean defectors.
This publication is the first in Korea to compare cancer terminology between North and South Korea. Based on the 'Korean Cancer Terminology Dictionary' published by the National Cancer Center in 2019, 1,200 frequently used cancer terms from various medical departments were selected and organized in an easy-to-understand manner.
This book is also the third outcome of the North-South disease language comparison research conducted by the National Cancer Center's Peace Medical Center. In 2020, the Ministry of Unification's Hanawon and the Center published the 'North and South Korea Disease Language Communication Casebook,' and last year, in collaboration with Hanawon and Goyang City, they published 'North Korean Defectors Met in the Clinic.'
Seo Hong-gwan, Director of the National Cancer Center, said, “Since our nation was divided into South and North Korea, the languages of the two have become greatly differentiated, and especially in the field of cancer and other medical specialized terminology, this divergence has caused communication difficulties among medical personnel and patients from both sides, intensifying the pain of division. We will continue to make efforts to strengthen various customized support projects for North Korean defectors and to enhance continuous cooperation in the health and medical fields between North and South Korea, based on the administrative support of Goyang City.”
