LIG Nex1 Strengthens New Space Capabilities ... Completes 'Satellite System Academy'
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Duyul] LIG Nex1 conducted a ‘Satellite System Academy’ program consisting of 11 satellite common courses over a total of 6 months to strengthen capabilities for leading the New Space era.
LIG Nex1 expanded and launched a dedicated satellite organization in 2020 and declared the ‘LIG Nex1 Space Vision and Strategy’ in 2022, carrying out various space development projects such as the Korean Positioning System (KPS) and the Geostationary Public Multi-Communication Satellite (GK3) project.
The purpose of this ‘Satellite System Academy’ program, hosted by the Satellite System Research Institute, is to cultivate the basic capabilities of members who will lead satellite projects.
The program, which started on July 19 at the LIG Nex1 Yongin House, began with ‘Satellite Overview and Orbit’ and continued until December with presentations on space environment, satellite orbits, satellite systems, various satellite payloads such as SAR, communication, navigation, and satellite testing.
About 300 LIG Nex1 employees participating in satellite projects and those interested in satellites also took part in the program.
Researchers with experience and know-how in numerous satellite projects and experts within the Satellite System Research Institute conducted field-specific programs, and domestic and international industry-academia-research experts were invited regularly to deliver in-depth lectures.
LIG Nex1 is developing SAR payloads for practical, medium, and small low Earth orbit satellites, as well as public multi-communication (GK3) payloads for geostationary satellites, and is participating in the development and integration of ground segments, receivers, and payloads for the Korean Positioning System (KPS).
It is also focusing on developing core satellite components such as electro-optical (EO/IR) payloads, CMG, phased array antennas, and onboard processing units.
LIG Nex1 declared its vision as a ‘Technology Innovation Company in the New Space Era’ to participate in the private-led space industry.
In line with government promotion strategies, it is expanding domestic satellite project participation including satellite systems, core components, and satellite information data service market entry, and is establishing a ‘Utilization Center’ through its own investment for the service market.
In August, at the Farnborough Airshow in the UK, after signing an MOU with Finland’s ICEYE, which has recently gained attention for its small SAR satellites, LIG Nex1 held business consultations, expanding domestic and international cooperation fields and concretizing plans to enter the global satellite market.
