Gwangju Labor Office Awards Certificate of Commendation to Outstanding Contributors to Safety Helmet Wearing Campaign
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Gwangju Regional Employment and Labor Office (Director Hwang Jongcheol) announced on the 22nd that, together with the Gwangju Regional Headquarters of the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency (Head Kim Mooyoung), it held an award ceremony and presentation on the 21st for outstanding sites and contributors related to the safety helmet campaign.
The event was held as part of the 'Safety Helmet Wearing' campaign jointly promoted from May to November through an agreement among labor, management, civic groups, and government to protect workers from fall accidents at construction sites in Gwangju and Jeonnam.
Four recipients were selected for the Gwangju Regional Employment and Labor Office Director’s Commendation and four for the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency Chairman’s Commendation.
The awardees include site managers from Jeongwang General Construction Co., Ltd., Ugang General Construction Co., Ltd., Yale General Construction Co., Ltd., Gawon Construction Industry Co., Ltd., and Taeseong General Construction Co., Ltd., as well as related organization representatives such as Masoongchun, CEO of In Construction Safety Co., Ltd., Oh Myunggeun, CEO of Maeil Safety Technology Co., Ltd., and a total of eight employees from the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency Gwangju Regional Headquarters.
The five site managers implemented measures such as the three-strike-out system for safety helmets and reward systems for workers who excel in helmet wearing to effectively improve the actual helmet wearing rate on site to prevent fall accidents among workers.
The three awardees from related organizations were highly evaluated for their active participation in various linked activities to promote the campaign and improve helmet wearing rates, thereby revitalizing the campaign practice atmosphere.
The Gwangju Regional Employment and Labor Office and the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency Gwangju Regional Headquarters have been promoting a joint safety helmet wearing campaign among labor, management, civic groups, and government from May to November this year to raise awareness and build consensus on the importance of wearing safety helmets, aiming to reduce the number of serious accident fatalities at small and medium-sized sites with less than 8 billion KRW in scale, in cooperation with local governments and accident prevention agencies.
Hwang Jongcheol, Director of the Gwangju Regional Employment and Labor Office, said, “Please recognize that wearing a safety helmet is the most basic matter to protect the life of the worker,” and added, “We plan to focus on inspecting employers’ obligations to provide helmets and workers’ obligations to wear helmets again next year.”

Meanwhile, an analysis of serious accident fatalities at sites under 8 billion KRW over the past five years (January to November) showed an average annual death toll of 10.4, but this year during the same period, it decreased by about 41% to 6.
