Rejected for being old or unattractive... Strange hiring practices at Catholic University and Uijeongbu Seongmo Hospital
Detected in Ministry of Education Audit... Extra Points Given to Catholic Believers
Cases of Purchasing Gym Memberships with Research Funds Also Detected
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] It has been revealed that Catholic University and Catholic University Uijeongbu St. Mary's Hospital disqualified applicants for office positions for suspicious reasons during the hiring process.
According to the comprehensive audit results of the Catholic Foundation and Catholic University disclosed by the Ministry of Education on the 21st, Catholic University disqualified 13 applicants from the document screening in October 2020 for office staff recruitment because they were aged 31 or older.
Catholic University also assigned differential scores ranging from a minimum of 5 points to a maximum of 10 points based on age and gender to 59 applicants under the age of 31.
Catholic University Uijeongbu St. Mary's Hospital was also found to have disqualified applicants during the document screening for office staff recruitment due to reasons such as appearance.
During the document screening for office staff recruitment in 2016, Catholic University Uijeongbu St. Mary's Hospital conducted the evaluation without forming a separate panel of judges, with only two employees including Mr. A performing the document assessment.
In this process, applicants were unfairly given additional points for appearance ranging from a minimum of 2 points to a maximum of 25 points, and 3 points were unjustly awarded to Catholic believers. As a result, 12 applicants who could have passed the document screening without these additional points were disqualified.
Among those who failed the document screening, some were rejected for reasons such as "poor appearance."
In particular, it was revealed that Mr. A improperly participated in the hiring process when his son applied for an office staff position in September 2016. Despite his son's language test scores being invalid after two years, he was awarded language points and job qualification points arbitrarily. After barely passing the document screening, Mr. A directly participated as a committee member in the interview stage and gave his son the highest score among 10 applicants.
The Ministry of Education has requested a prosecution investigation into Mr. A.
Additionally, at the Catholic Central Medical Center, it was found that five professors and others improperly spent a total of 55,818,000 KRW of surgical research funds, which were supposed to be used only for hospital-related purposes, from March 2018 to July of this year. Among them, there was a case where a personal gym membership worth approximately 750,000 KRW was purchased using surgical research funds.
