A Mother of Two Sons Suffering from Atopy Writes 'Everything About Atopy and Allergies'
Professor Kim Ji-hyun of Samsung Seoul Hospital Pediatrics New Book
From Food Management to Drug Treatment
The Parent's 'Bible' for Children's Health
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] Watching a child suffer from atopy and allergies, mothers often struggle with feelings of guilt. They wonder if they did something wrong during pregnancy or after the child was born. Whenever Professor Kim Ji-hyun of the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescents at Samsung Seoul Hospital sees mothers shedding tears, she holds their hands tightly and says, "It is not your fault."
Professor Kim, an authority in the fields of atopic dermatitis and food allergies who treats over 3,000 patients annually, has published a new book titled Everything About Atopy and Allergies. She is also a mother of two sons who suffered from atopic dermatitis. Realizing that there was no book at home for families with children suffering from atopy and allergies to refer to whenever needed, she decided to write one herself.
This book is a bible on atopy and allergies. It clearly organizes what atopic dermatitis is, how to diagnose and manage it, how to feed children with food allergies, and what the intake standards are. It also includes detailed advice on the plans and mindset parents should have during the long treatment process, as well as principles for baby food preparation for the child. Understanding the hearts of parents of patients better than anyone else, Professor Kim emphasizes the importance of psychological care and shares successful treatment cases, giving strength to parents who have exhausted their positive energy during the parenting journey.
Graduating from Chung-Ang University College of Medicine and earning her master's and doctoral degrees from the same university, Professor Kim has devoted herself to clinical practice and research in atopic dermatitis and allergies. She has been recognized for her expertise by receiving awards from the Korean Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Clinical Immunology, the Korean Academy of Pediatric Allergy and Respiratory Disease, the Asia Pacific Association of Pediatric Allergy, Respirology and Immunology, the Asian Society for Pediatric Research, and the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. In 2018, she trained at NJH (National Jewish Health) in Denver, USA, where she elevated her knowledge of research and treatment of atopic dermatitis and food allergies under the world-renowned expert Professor Donald Leung.
Over the past decade, Professor Kim has published more than 100 medical papers in domestic and international journals. This year, she gave up all her days off and systematically organized and kindly answered questions that mothers had whenever she had spare time. Even until the last page of the book, consideration for children with atopy and allergies and their mothers is evident.
