Seoul City Calls for Universities to Participate in 'Moatown Class-Linked Project'
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyemin] The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 21st that it will publicly recruit universities and graduate schools to participate in the "University Collaboration Moa Town Course-linked Project," which proposes design ideas and development models by participating in the process of promoting Moa Town (Moa Housing), a new method of renovating low-rise residential areas, until the 20th of next month.
This project is conducted in a way that professors and students study and research topics related to Moa Town for one semester in architecture, urban planning, and real estate-related courses. After identifying suitable locations for the Moa Town project among areas with urban planning regulations such as height restriction zones, natural landscape zones, and historical-cultural environment preservation zones within Seoul, a Moa Town plan appropriate for the target site is derived.
Eligible participants are 2- to 5-year universities (graduate schools) nationwide that can link this project with their curriculum in the first half of next year, and applications are accepted by individual colleges within departments related to architecture, urban planning, and real estate. The city will select about eight universities (graduate schools) and support them with an execution budget of 5 to 10 million KRW. After the course, a performance sharing session will be held, and outstanding participating students will be awarded the Mayor's Prize.

Meanwhile, Moa Town refers to a small-scale housing maintenance management area that gathers old low-rise residential areas where large-scale redevelopment under 10㎡ is difficult into one group to establish a management plan and promote maintenance projects. It aims to resolve chronic problems in densely populated low-rise housing areas such as parking difficulties and prevent isolated apartment developments caused by indiscriminate individual projects. Up to this year, a total of 65 locations have been selected as Moa Town target sites, and among them, management plans for four Moa Towns have been approved.
