Last October, the city held a design competition under the theme ‘The Beginning of the Garden City, Wolryang Seongyeong (月亮仙境),’ meaning ‘A Garden of Immortals Illuminated by Moonlight,’ an ideal of gardens such as Geumcheon Gugok Culture, based on the natural environment and historical and cultural resources, aiming to create unique and beautiful gardens with harmony with the surrounding natural environment, artistry, and work quality.
It was decided to create three artist gardens on a site of approximately 6,600㎡ within the Wolasan forest in Jinju. To this end, six teams were invited to submit works, and after judging and presentation reviews, three final winning works were selected for their high spatial understanding, including realization of a ‘forest garden’ that utilizes the terrain of Wolasan and smooth maintenance and management.
The judging panel consisted of seven members, including Professor Seong Jong-sang of Seoul National University as the chairperson, landscape and garden experts, and architectural practitioners.
Chairman Seong said, “It was a great opportunity to see garden design works by six domestic garden and landscape professional teams who well understood and reflected the characteristics of Wolasan,” adding, “We selected three works that closely realized the ‘Garden of Immortals Illuminated by Moonlight’ so that citizens can visit, enjoy, and experience them.”
Jinju City granted Openness Studio, JJ Garden Studio, and Sinhwa Consulting design rights worth 55 million won each and the right to contract for design intent implementation services, while the remaining three works received an invitation fee of 10 million won each.
The city plans to start the detailed design for the ‘Jinju Wolasan Artist Garden Creation’ within this month and aims to complete the project by June next year.
