US Military Releases Live-Fire Footage... "Scheduled Routine Training"
USFK Social Media Announces "MLRS Firing Exercise in Cheorwon on the 5th-6th"
[Asia Economy Yang Nak-gyu, Military Specialist Reporter] The US Forces Korea disclosed scenes of artillery training conducted in Cheorwon earlier this month, describing it as a "routine regular live-fire exercise."
On the 5th and 6th, South Korea and the US conducted firing exercises in Samyulli and Dongmakri, firing 57 rounds from Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS) and 140 rounds from K9 self-propelled howitzers. The US 2nd Infantry Division posted photos on social media platforms such as Twitter on the night of the 14th, stating that the 210th Field Artillery Brigade conducted MLRS firing training in Damteo Valley on the 5th and 6th of this month. Damteo Valley is located in Samyulli, Cheorwon-gun. This plan was also notified in advance to nearby residents.
At that time, North Korea labeled the exercise as a "provocation," claiming it violated the September 19 military agreement, and fired multiple rocket launchers into the maritime buffer zone. The US military’s disclosure of the firing scenes is interpreted as an indirect way to show that North Korea’s claims are groundless.
The 2nd Infantry Division explained in the post that they "conducted a routine regular live-fire exercise," adding that "the launcher section continuously verifies the knowledge and capabilities of its personnel to maintain 'Fight Tonight' (constant combat readiness) capability."
Since the exercise took place outside the ground buffer zone (5 km south of the Military Demarcation Line) where artillery firing training is suspended under the September 19 military agreement, it was a legitimate exercise in compliance with the agreement. However, North Korea used this as a pretext to fire about 130 rounds of multiple rocket launchers and other munitions into the East Sea and West Sea maritime buffer zones on the 5th, and fired about 100 rounds into the East Sea maritime buffer zone on the 6th.
