View original image[Asia Economy Reporter No Woo-rae] Golf originated in Scotland about 600 years ago in the 15th century. It boasts a long history. However, there are etiquette rules that no longer fit the current situation. These are etiquettes that all generations should discard to enjoy golf.
One such etiquette is taking off your hat and greeting after a round. One hand holds the putter and ball. Taking off the hat can cause you to drop the putter and damage the green. Shaking hands with a hand that has touched a sweat-soaked hat is unhygienic. Wearing the hat with the brim turned backward is also not acceptable. It is criticized for disregarding individuality and fashion.
Using mobile phones is prohibited. Not making a call for five hours is almost impossible in the digital age. It should be allowed as much as a distance measuring device. Instead, be careful to make calls without disturbing other players.
The current hot topic in golf is speed. Players want to play as quickly as possible. Golf follows the principle of ‘won-gu-seon-ta (遠球先打)’, meaning the player farthest from the hole plays first regardless of whether the ball is on the green. However, this wastes time. It is better for the prepared golfer to play first. But approach carefully to avoid ball-strike injuries.
Shorts are prohibited. At famous private golf clubs, playing rounds wearing shorts is not allowed. This etiquette is hard to understand. There is no need to wear long pants and sweat in the hot summer.
Unnecessary ball marking should also be eliminated. If the ball is covered in mud or wet, marking and cleaning it is allowed. However, if it does not disturb fellow players, marking is not necessary. This is a wise way to shorten play time.
