Establishing a Cooperative System to Expand Domestic and International Standardization Research and Strengthen Member Companies' Competitiveness

The Digital Twin Forum (hereinafter referred to as the ‘Forum’) announced that as it prepares to wrap up 2022, it has reviewed its achievements over the past two years and plans to expand its activities more actively in the coming year.

Since its establishment in September 2021, the Forum has become the leading group of domestic experts related to digital twins, leading the introduction and expansion of digital twins across industries, and actively supporting detailed subcommittees for domestic and international standardization activities and ecosystem revitalization.

With active participation from industry, academia, and research institutes, various research and commercialization efforts are currently underway centered around key subcommittees. Recently, VIVE Company Inc., an executive member of the Forum, was selected as the general project manager for the ‘Development of Technology for Application and Utilization of Marine Spatial Digital Twin’ project, and together with the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology and Korea Ocean Meteorological Technology Co., Ltd., is promoting the ‘4D Marine Digital Twin Platform Construction,’ showing tangible results.

The Forum plans to further expand the participation of companies to secure diversity in digital twin technologies, discover commercialization items that can be linked to various industrial sectors, and expand its seven service and domain subcommittees (Smart City, Smart Port, Smart Building, Smart Factory, Smart Farm, Smart Safety, Smart Defense) and two foundational subcommittees (Standards, Law & Policy; Technology, Solutions & Platforms).

Focusing on key subcommittees, the Forum has accelerated standardization research with five international standard contributions and two domestic standard contributions adopted this year. To support standardization research, it participates in the ‘ICT Standardization Forum’ project through the Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA), and in 2023, it plans to further expand domestic and international standard contribution activities to promote the standardization of core technologies and the dissemination of new technologies.

Moreover, the Forum is working to broaden the base of digital twin technology by hosting joint academic conferences and idea competitions.

In June, jointly with the Korean Society of Industrial and Systems Engineering, the Forum held a spring academic conference and international symposium under the theme ‘Digital Twin and Metaverse,’ reviewing the present and future of digital twin technology and discussing future directions. In November, it co-hosted the ‘Digital Twin Service Idea Competition Awards Ceremony,’ awarding certificates and prizes to four ideas in the general category and three ideas in the university student category.

Professor Oh Hyung-sul of Kangwon National University, co-chair of the Forum, stated, “Digital transformation (DX) is rapidly progressing in most industrial sectors, and as uncertainty grows, digital twin technology is being actively promoted in public and major industrial sectors for optimal decision-making.” He added, “To revitalize digital twin technology, starting next year, we will do our best to lead the first year of encouraging more diverse external activities and corporate participation, taking on the role of leading research across industry, academia, research institutes, and government.”
