"Biden and Trump Should Stop Running"... Public Opinion Shows 'Overwhelming Opposition'
Checking Public Opinion in CNBC Poll
[Asia Economy International Desk Reporter] A survey has revealed that American voters do not want either President Joe Biden or former President Donald Trump to run in the 2024 presidential election.
According to a survey conducted by CNBC from the 26th to the 30th of last month, polling 801 voters nationwide and released on the 10th (local time) (with a margin of error of ±3.5 percentage points), 70% of respondents said President Biden should not run in the next presidential election. Only 19% said he should run.
The percentage of respondents who did not want President Biden to run was 57% among Democratic supporters, 86% among Republican supporters, and 66% among independents. President Biden has repeatedly expressed his intention to run in the next election, and his decision is expected to be announced early next year after the year-end holidays. Following the Democrats' unexpectedly strong performance in last month’s midterm elections, the U.S. political sphere anticipates that President Biden will declare his candidacy.
Among those who said President Biden should not run, nearly half (47%) cited his age as the main reason. Among Democratic supporters, 61% expressed concern about Biden’s advanced age. Having turned 80 last month, President Biden is the oldest president in U.S. history.
Public sentiment toward former President Trump was similar. 61% of respondents did not want him to run. Among Republican supporters, 37% opposed Trump’s candidacy, while 88% of Democratic supporters and 61% of independents opposed it. Support for his candidacy was 30%. However, among those opposing the 76-year-old Trump’s run, only 8% cited age as a concern.
In this survey, President Biden’s approval rating was 41%, down 5 percentage points from the 46% recorded in a similar survey in October. The percentage of respondents who did not support Biden rose 4 percentage points to 54%. Support for his handling of economic issues fell from 40% in October to 38%. Only 14% of respondents said the U.S. economy was good or excellent, marking the lowest level since a similar survey in 2013.
