Gwangju Seo-gu Conducts Special Surveillance and Crackdown on Illegal Garbage Disposal in Sangmu District

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Shin Dong-ho] Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, has been conducting special enforcement and guidance against illegal waste disposal centered around entertainment districts in the Sangmu Square area since the 8th to improve the culture of household waste disposal in the Sangmu district.

According to Seo-gu on the 9th, this enforcement and guidance was promoted to focus on educating about illegal waste disposal from businesses, improve the awareness of business owners, and establish a proper waste disposal culture in the local community.

Currently, the household waste disposal time in Seo-gu is from 8 PM to 6 AM the next day, but from 6 AM on Saturday to before 8 PM on Sunday is not included in the disposal time.

However, since most businesses continue to operate on weekends, they are intensively disposing of household waste from Saturday afternoon to early Sunday morning, causing Sangmu Square and its surroundings to suffer every weekend due to illegal dumping of cigarette butts, flyers, and other waste.

In response, Seo-gu established a special cleaning plan for the Sangmu district, formed an inspection team, and focused on guidance and inspection of ▲non-use of designated garbage bags ▲non-use of food waste containers and failure to attach stickers ▲mixing food waste into designated garbage bags.

They also conducted promotional activities by distributing materials encouraging compliance with disposal times and proper waste separation for each business.

A Seo-gu official said, “This enforcement and guidance aims to raise awareness of waste disposal issues among businesses and create a clean business atmosphere where each store cleans in front of itself,” adding, “We will continue enforcement activities until a proper waste disposal culture is established and make every effort to create a clean Sangmu district.”

Meanwhile, since October, Seo-gu has been conducting large-scale cleanliness activities targeting the Sangmu district, including deploying a dedicated cleaning team on Sundays and posting banners to ensure compliance with disposal times.
