'Flood Damage' Area in Pungdeokcheon-dong, Yongin Designated as Priority Sewer Maintenance Zone
[Asia Economy (Yongin) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] The area around Pungdeokcheon-dong, Suji-gu, Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, which was flooded due to heavy rain in August, has been designated as a priority sewerage maintenance management area.
Yongin City, Gyeonggi Province, announced on the 5th that the Ministry of Environment recently confirmed the area around 69 Pungdeokcheon-dong, Suji-gu, as a "2022 Priority Sewerage Maintenance Management Area" due to damage caused by heavy rain.
Accordingly, Yongin City will invest a total of 38 billion KRW, including 22.8 billion KRW in national funds, 7.6 billion KRW in provincial funds, and 7.6 billion KRW in city funds, to install a total of 2.77 km of improved stormwater pipelines and construct a new drainage pumping station in the area. Construction will begin in 2024 and be completed in 2026.
The priority sewerage maintenance management areas are designated by the Ministry of Environment after investigating areas where flooding damage has occurred or is likely to occur due to sewer overflow, or areas that could deteriorate the water quality of public water bodies, based on applications from local governments.
From 2013 to last year, a total of 135 areas nationwide have been designated, with 10 to 26 areas designated annually.
The selected area around 69 Pungdeokcheon-dong (0.09 km²) was flooded by heavy rain in August, resulting in 15 buildings being submerged, 21 displaced residents, and property damage amounting to 420 million KRW.

A city official stated, "We will continue to proactively respond to flood prevention by applying for designation of areas with potential flood damage as priority sewerage maintenance management areas."
