During the meeting with Hong Dong-gon, head of the Nakdong River Basin Environmental Office, Mayor Jeong Jong-bok stated, “We can never accept the establishment of a new medical waste incineration facility with a capacity five times that of the existing NC Medi’s facility in Jeonggwan New Town, a densely populated residential area with over 80,000 residents,” and emphasized, “The Nakdong River Basin Environmental Office should reject NC Medi’s business plan for the new medical waste incineration facility installation.”
He continued, “NC Medi, which is currently operating, was re-designated as a subject for odor emission facility reporting last March, allowing residents of Jeonggwan New Town to live in a more pleasant environment,” and urged, “The Nakdong River Basin Environmental Office must thoroughly and continuously inspect whether NC Medi faithfully implements odor prevention measures according to the odor prevention plan.”
Earlier in July, NC Medi submitted a business plan to the Nakdong River Basin Environmental Office to operate a new incineration facility in Yerim-ri, Jeonggwan-eup, with a capacity five times larger than the existing medical waste incineration facility operating in Yongsu-ri, Jeonggwan-eup.
In response, Gijang County clearly expressed its opposition to the new installation of NC Medi’s medical waste incineration facility by submitting a review opinion on relevant laws and a residents’ opinion letter to the Nakdong River Basin Environmental Office.
