The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on the 23rd that it held the 3rd meeting of the Nuclear Power Export Strategy Promotion Committee at Hotel Naru in Mapo-gu, Seoul, attended by Minister Lee Chang-yang of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, related ministries, and public enterprise officials. The committee was launched in August this year to promote overseas expansion and strengthen competitiveness in the nuclear power and related industries.
Minister Lee said, "Exporting nuclear power equipment is another pillar of nuclear power exports that can lead to new nuclear power cooperation," adding, "Following the successful bid for the El-Dabaa nuclear power plant in Egypt, the public and private sectors must make every effort to achieve second and third export successes through equipment exports."
He particularly noted that emerging nuclear power countries are expanding investments in nuclear power equipment by separating the first and second construction projects or promoting refurbishment and maintenance of aging nuclear power plants, urging close monitoring of each country's order trends. The Promotion Committee reviewed major nuclear power equipment projects underway in emerging nuclear power countries such as Romania and analyzed the business environment.
Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) plans to place orders for 20 equipment items related to the El-Dabaa nuclear power plant within this year, finalize dispatched personnel, and establish a construction office by January next year. The Promotion Committee also decided to accelerate efforts to secure financing and improve licensing systems for the smooth progress of the Polish nuclear power construction project.
Regarding cooperation on the Polish nuclear power construction, opinions were exchanged focusing on the schedule for establishing a nuclear power development plan based on the Korean nuclear power model APR1400 and future action plans. In particular, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy requested the relevant ministries to promptly review support for financing nuclear power projects and improving nuclear power-related licensing systems. To target the Czech nuclear power project, cooperation projects in defense, industry and energy, and infrastructure will be concretized.
