View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] Large supermarkets have put ultra-low-priced food items at the forefront to target 'home viewers' who watch World Cup matches at home. Each company has been strengthening their ready-to-eat food (deli) items such as chicken and sweet and sour pork, and by running large-scale discount events, they appear to be challenging famous franchises.
According to Emart on the 24th, until the 30th, 'Amazing Dakgangjeong' is offered at 12,784 won with a 20% discount when using Shinsegae points, and 'Fried Wings and Drumsticks' are available at 896 won each with a 30% discount. 'Amazing Flatfish and Salmon Sushi' is sold at 15,984 won with a 20% discount, and 'Amazing Barbecue Whole Jokbal' is sold at 21,980 won. For beer, Hoegaarden Pear, Carlsberg, Alhambra Lager Singular, etc., are sold at 3,000 won each, and if you buy 5 cans, you can purchase them for 8,000 won.
Lotte Mart launched '7-Minute Two Chickens (16 pieces)' and '16 Shrimp Sushi (16 pieces)' to wish for the Korean national soccer team's advancement to the round of 16. Both products are sold at 16,160 won, and sales will end once the pre-prepared quantity of 16,160 packs is sold out. They also prepared a one-day special price product for L.Point members on the day of the Korea match. On that day, Gangyeot Boneless Dakgangjeong is sold at 9,800 won with a 7,000 won discount, and on the 28th, a full container of sweet and sour pork is offered at a 20% discounted price.
Homeplus also prepared various food items. Dangdang Chicken, which sold over 1.2 million pieces in four months since its launch, offers 8 types including Fried (6,990 won) and Sweet Seasoned (7,990 won). On the day and the 28th, Koshihikari sushi sets are offered at 18,990 won with a 1,000 won discount for My Homeplus membership members. The lemon sauce sweet and sour pork, perfect for a light solo meal, is sold at 3,990 won with a 1,000 won discount.
Large supermarkets have enjoyed special demand during the World Cup. On the days when the Korean national team’s main tournament matches take place, sales of alcoholic beverages and snacks have significantly increased. At Lotte Mart, during the Sweden match, the first game of the 2018 Russia World Cup, chicken and beer sales increased by 100% and 80% respectively compared to the previous week. Deli sales rose by 35%, and dried snacks by 70%.
During the recent two national team evaluation matches, food sales also increased. At Emart, on the 11th during the Iceland match, deli sales such as chicken (22%), fried foods and jeon (Korean pancakes) (138%), sushi (13%), and grilled items (10%) rose compared to the previous month. Alcohol sales also increased overall, including beer (58%), soju (66%), wine (125%), and spirits (125%). At Lotte Mart, on September 27 during the Cameroon match, sales of chicken (15%), snacks (15%), beer (15%), and spirits (25%) increased compared to the previous week.
A representative from a large supermarket said, “We have prepared various products for customers who hope for Korea’s success in the World Cup,” adding, “We plan to continue offering popular food items at reasonable prices during the remaining period to enhance the joy of cheering.”
