[Fashion Tips] How to Choose Winter Essential 'Padding'... What Materials and Designs Should You Consider?
What Matters When Choosing Padding Is 'Warmth'... Higher Fill Power Is Better
Classified by Goose Habitat... Northern Hemisphere Geese Are 'Highly Valued'
[Asia Economy Reporter Song Seung-yoon] With the sudden drop in temperature, many people have started taking out their old winter clothes or purchasing new outerwear. The fashion industry is also entering the peak clothing season, releasing a variety of outerwear products one after another.
However, when it comes to choosing a padding jacket, there are many considerations. Whether to opt for one made with functional materials, choose the thickest padding possible, or buy a product with high fill power (the resilience of the filling) are common concerns.
Padding jackets can be broadly categorized based on the filling material: synthetic fiber paddings containing materials like Thinsulate or Wellon, and animal feather paddings such as duck down (duck feathers) or goose down (goose feathers). They can also be classified by length or weight into short paddings, long paddings, lightweight paddings, or heavy down jackets. The most important factor when choosing a padding jacket is warmth. Generally, goose down offers the best insulation, and higher fill power is believed to provide greater warmth.
First, fill power refers to the amount of expansion when compressing and then allowing 1 ounce (28.35g) of down to recover. The higher this number, the thicker the air layer formed, which improves insulation. However, a higher fill power alone does not guarantee better quality. The ratio of down to feathers is also important. The closer the ratio is to 9:1 (down to feathers), the better the insulation. If this ratio is reversed, padding with synthetic fiber filling might actually be warmer. Additionally, if the amount of filling (fill weight) is low, even a high fill power may result in reduced warmth.
The type of goose down is also significant. Even among goose feathers, the grade varies depending on the region where the geese live. Geese inhabiting cold northern hemisphere regions are generally more highly valued than those raised in warmer southern hemisphere areas. Goose down from Poland, Hungary, and Siberia is more expensive than Chinese goose down and is mainly used in luxury brands.
The outer fabric deserves as much attention as the filling. Various materials, including synthetic fibers like nylon and polyester, are widely used for the outer shell. It is advisable to check whether the seams are strong enough to prevent filling from leaking out and whether the material is resistant to tearing. Also, confirming whether the hood is detachable can be useful for different situations.

Length selection is another important consideration. While short paddings are expected to remain popular this year, long paddings naturally provide better warmth due to their structure. However, wearing a long padding jacket can restrict lower body movement compared to a short padding, which may feel cumbersome. Therefore, choosing the length according to one’s lifestyle is a good alternative.
