Dongwon F&B, 137 Cans Consumed Per Citizen... Unchallenged No.1 in Tuna Cans
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] South Korea's representative canned tuna brand, 'Dongwon Tuna,' celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.
According to Dongwon Group on the 22nd, the founder and honorary chairman Kim Jae-cheol developed 'Dongwon Tuna' in 1982 with the determination to "provide high-quality protein to the people." At the time of its launch, Dongwon Tuna was considered an expensive "premium food," then evolved into a "convenience food" through flavored tuna in the 1990s, and in the 2000s, it became loved as a "health food" emphasizing health benefits, maintaining its position as the number one canned tuna brand in the domestic market for 40 years.
In 2014, Dongwon Tuna was the first in the industry to surpass cumulative sales of 5 billion cans, and to date, cumulative sales have exceeded 7 billion cans. This means that each South Korean (based on a population of 51 million) has consumed 137.2 cans. Currently, Dongwon Tuna sells more than 200 million cans annually. Dongwon F&B recently released a limited edition 'Dongwon Tuna Champion Edition' to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Dongwon Tuna and the 40th anniversary of the KBO League.

A 150g can of Dongwon Tuna contains 28g of protein, which is more than half of the adult daily recommended protein intake (55g). In addition to protein, it contains calcium, DHA, EPA, omega-6, and vitamins. Especially, tuna is rich in selenium, which boosts immunity. One can of Dongwon Tuna provides about 120㎍ of selenium, which meets the World Health Organization (WHO) daily recommended intake.
