[Asia Economy Reporter Han Seung-gon] A pharmacist who was prosecuted for selling masks, band-aids, and other items at prices higher than the market price and refusing customers' refund requests admitted to the charges.
The Daejeon District Court Criminal Division 5 (Presiding Judge Kim Jeong-heon) held the first trial on the morning of the 21st for Mr. A (43), who was indicted on charges of fraud and obstruction of business.
According to the prosecution's allegations, Mr. A is accused of selling a pack of painkillers, a mask, band-aids, cold medicine, etc., each for 50,000 won, which is higher than the market price, last year. It was found that Mr. A embezzled a total difference of approximately 1,248,000 won over 25 transactions using this method.
He is also accused of threatening customers by stabbing a paper box with a weapon when a customer who checked the payment amount requested a refund. Additionally, he is charged with disturbing hospital operations by causing a commotion targeting nurses at a hospital in Sejong City in June and December of last year.

Mr. A's defense attorney acknowledged all the prosecution's allegations and stated that he is remorseful. However, the defense claimed diminished responsibility, stating that Mr. A was suffering from bipolar affective disorder. Bipolar affective disorder is a mental illness characterized by alternating episodes of elevated mood (mania) and persistent depressive mood (depression), commonly known as bipolar disorder. The defense argued that Mr. A was in a state of diminished responsibility at the time of the crime due to not taking medication and was hospitalized for a month for mental illness treatment, repeatedly asserting diminished responsibility. Mr. A has currently reported the closure of his pharmacy.
