[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Taewon] Noh Seung-yul (31, photo) tied for 46th place, 6 strokes behind the leader, after the first round of the PGA Tour RSM Classic (total prize money $8.1 million). This tournament is the last official PGA Tour event of the year.
On the 17th (local time), Noh shot 2-under-par with 4 birdies and 2 bogeys on the first day of the tournament held at Sea Island Resort in St. Simons Island, Georgia, USA.
The tournament is played by alternating the first and second rounds between the Seaside Course (par 70, 7,005 yards) and the Plantation Course (par 72, 7,060 yards) within Sea Island Resort, with the third and fourth rounds played on the Seaside Course.
The 2022-2023 PGA Tour season will enter a break after this tournament. The next event is the Sentry Champions Tournament in January next year.
Initially, many top-ranked players did not participate, drawing attention to the possibility of Korean players winning, as 35 of the top 40 players in the world rankings were absent. However, Korean players generally showed disappointing performances on the first day.
Besides Noh Seung-yul, Kim Sung-hyun (24) finished tied for 86th at even par, and An Byeong-hun (31) tied for 108th at 1-over-par. Kang Sung-hoon (35) ended the first day tied for 120th at 2-over-par.
The '23-year-old young gun' Cole Hammer (USA) surged with an 8-under-par to top the leaderboard. Hammer received the Mark H. McCormack Medal in 2019, awarded to the world's best amateur player. He turned professional in June this year.
