Erdogan: "US and Russia Will Not Use Nuclear Weapons in Ukraine War"
[Asia Economy Reporter Minji Lee] Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of Turkiye (Turkey), stated that Russia and the United States will not use nuclear weapons due to the war in Ukraine.
According to AFP and other news agencies on the 17th, President Erdogan made these remarks during a meeting with reporters on the plane returning home after attending the Group of Twenty (G20) summit held in Bali, Indonesia, regarding the recent meeting between the heads of intelligence agencies of the United States and Russia in Turkiye's capital, Ankara.
President Erdogan said, "According to the information I received from the intelligence agencies, neither side will use nuclear weapons at this time," adding, "The two countries need to meet more frequently to prevent a new world war."
On the 14th, William Burns, Director of the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), met with Sergey Naryshkin, Director of Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), in Ankara and warned against the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine.
Russian government officials, including President Vladimir Putin, have suggested the possibility of using nuclear weapons, stating that they will employ "all means" to protect their territory, including regions annexed in Ukraine.
