'Disclosure of Disaster Victim List' Accusation Case Assigned to Seoul Police Anti-Corruption Crime Investigation Unit
[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] On the 16th, the police announced that they have assigned the case of the online media outlets that disclosed the real names of the Itaewon disaster victims to the Anti-Corruption Crime Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency. The police added, "We are currently reviewing related records and plan to conduct a swift investigation."
The previous morning, Jong-bae Lee, a member of the Seoul Metropolitan Council from the People Power Party, held a press conference in front of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency and filed complaints against two online media outlets for violating the Personal Information Protection Act. Lee stated, "The victims' names also constitute personal information of the bereaved families," and argued, "Disclosing real names without the consent of the families, followed by malicious comments or rumors, damages the honor of the deceased and causes mental distress to the families."
