[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] Yonsei University College of Medicine announced on the 16th the launch of the 'Yonsei Physician-Scientist Training Project Group' to nurture physician-scientists.
A physician-scientist refers to a talent who has undergone or completed medical education and conducts research based on that background. Recently, during the COVID-19 pandemic, physician-scientists have played a leading role in the development of vaccines and treatments, highlighting their importance even more.
The project group operates various programs to cultivate medical talents as leaders in biomedical sciences and the bioindustry. Yonsei University is currently implementing a project to train physician-scientists throughout the entire medical education cycle and has established several curricula that allow medical students to receive education in life sciences, artificial intelligence, and engineering.
Additionally, through the Seoksan-Yonsei Scholarship Project, students aspiring to pursue a doctoral program in science and technology (MD-PhD) after obtaining medical qualifications are pre-selected. Among resident graduate students, those wishing to pursue a doctorate in science and technology after acquiring specialist certification are educated in science and technology through the 'Convergent Physician-Scientist Support Project' in collaboration with Yonsei University's College of Engineering, College of Life Science and Biotechnology, College of Pharmacy, and College of Science.
In particular, each year, up to 10 new full-time doctoral students are selected from medical school graduates and specialists to nurture talents in basic life sciences, biomedical informatics, and medical engineering. Even after obtaining the MD-PhD, overseas training and translational research professor systems are implemented to help them grow as independent researchers. The project group plans to expand and reorganize these programs to develop a successful global model for training physician-scientists.
