Polish Foreign Ministry: "Russian Missiles Fell Near Border Area... Russian Ambassador Summoned"
Zelensky: "Russia Responsible for Attack on Poland"
Russia: "Intentional Provocation to Escalate War"
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs officially announced that a Russian-made missile fell in the border area with Ukraine, causing the missile explosion incident. The Polish government, which had maintained a cautious silence regarding whether Russia was responsible immediately after the incident, is reported to have strongly protested by summoning the Russian ambassador.
According to the Associated Press on the 15th (local time), the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a press release, "At 3:40 PM local time, a Russian-made missile fell near the village of Przewod?w close to the border with Ukraine, resulting in the deaths of two Polish citizens." However, it did not specify the exact type of missile or where it was launched from.
Additionally, the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, "To explain why a Russian-made missile fell on Polish territory causing the deaths of two citizens, the Russian ambassador to Poland was summoned and asked for a detailed explanation." Immediately after the incident, the Polish government had maintained a cautious stance, remaining silent about whether Russia was responsible.
This announcement came shortly after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared that the missile that fell in Poland was fired by the Russian military. In a national address that day, President Zelensky said, "Today, a Russian missile struck Poland, causing fatalities," and strongly condemned Russia, stating, "At around the same time, 85 missiles were launched in a massive Russian missile attack on several cities in Ukraine."
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) promptly announced that it would hold an emergency meeting on the 16th to discuss the missile strike issue in Poland. With the Polish government previously indicating it would consider invoking Article 4 of the NATO Charter, which guarantees security consultations and information sharing among member states in emergencies, debate is expected over whether this incident will trigger the collective defense clause under Article 5 of the NATO Charter.
