Safety Certification Must Be Verified Before Elevator Installation... Report Submission on Website
Uncertified Elevators Face Strict Sanctions Including Removal
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] On the 16th, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety requested that before planning the installation of elevators, the safety certification status of the elevator be checked to prevent safety accidents caused by elevator defects.
'Elevator Safety Certification' was introduced in 2019 to inspect and test whether elevator components meet safety standards before installation, and elevator manufacturers and importers must obtain certification from the Korea Elevator Safety Agency.
The elevator safety certification status can be easily checked by accessing the National Elevator Information Center website and entering the elevator model name, and if it is confirmed to be an uncertified elevator, a report can be immediately submitted on the website. Since March 2019, uncertified elevators cannot be sold or installed domestically, and the Ministry of the Interior and Safety imposes strong sanctions such as sales suspension and recall and destruction orders on uncertified elevators.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Korea Elevator Safety Agency are requesting an investigation into a company that imported and sold uncertified elevators and are taking measures to ensure safety, including ordering the destruction of the elevators.

Cho Sang-myung, Director of the Safety Policy Office at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, said, “As buildings become taller and larger, elevator usage continues to increase, so to prevent safety accidents, it is essential to check whether safety certification has been obtained before installation and to purchase and install elevators accordingly.”
