Evaluates Close High-Level Consultations on the Occasion of the Multilateral Meeting
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo In-ho] The chief nuclear envoys of South Korea and China agreed on the necessity of communication and cooperation regarding the situation on the Korean Peninsula through a video conference on the 15th, and decided to continue close consultations.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kim Gun, Head of the Korean Peninsula Peace Negotiation Headquarters, held a video conference with Liu Xiaoming, China's Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Affairs and chief nuclear envoy, on the morning of the same day, conducting in-depth discussions through diplomatic channels on the North Korean nuclear issue between South Korea and China.
Both sides highly evaluated the close consultations taking place recently at the highest level during multilateral meetings.
Head Kim expressed concern over North Korea's continuous provocations at an unprecedented frequency, escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula and in the region, and urged China to play an active role in ensuring North Korea halts provocations and engages in denuclearization talks.
He emphasized to the Chinese side the need to send a stern message to North Korea, which is in a situation capable of conducting a seventh nuclear test.
Furthermore, he stated that resolving the North Korean nuclear issue aligns with the common interests of regional countries and that close communication among relevant nations should be maintained for this purpose.
In response, Representative Liu said, "China will continue to play a constructive role in safeguarding peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and realizing denuclearization," and added, "I look forward to meeting Head Kim in person at the earliest opportunity."

Meanwhile, Representative Liu expressed condolences and sympathy to the victims and bereaved families of the Itaewon incident and expressed gratitude for South Korea's active cooperation in providing post-incident support to Chinese victims of the Itaewon tragedy.
