Among the injured, one is seriously wounded and the other has minor injuries. It is reported that no Korean-American victims have been confirmed so far.
According to the Associated Press (AP) and The Washington Post (WP) on the 14th (local time), five casualties occurred due to a shooting spree in a parking lot on the University of Virginia campus located in Charlottesville, Virginia. After the gunshots were reported, the university sent an emergency evacuation message to all students, and all classes were canceled the following day. Police, who blocked off the scene and pursued the suspect, arrested Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. (22) about 80 miles (approximately 129 km) from the campus 12 hours after the incident. He was charged with second-degree murder and aggravated firearm offenses.
According to the police, Jones, an undergraduate student at the University of Virginia, was once a member of the football team but had not been on the team for over a year. In September, he revealed to a friend that he possessed a firearm, which put him under close observation by the university. However, in a subsequent investigation conducted by the university, Jones was found not to have made any threatening statements related to firearm possession, and his roommate also testified that he had never seen Jones's firearm. It was also confirmed that he violated firearm carrying laws on the outskirts of the area in February last year.

Jim Ryan, president of the University of Virginia, previously sent a letter to the university stating that Jones was suspected of carrying out the shooting and provided information about his appearance and vehicle. President Ryan also explained that authorities have not yet fully understood the circumstances of the incident, including the motive. In the letter, he said, "This is a message that no leader ever wants to send," and added, "It is deeply shocking that this kind of violence occurred at the University of Virginia, and it is a very shocking incident for everyone in our university community."
