[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Kim Hyunjung] The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it "values the United States' proposal to hold a meeting" regarding the first face-to-face summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden.
Zhao Lijian, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said at a regular briefing on the 10th that regarding President Biden's intention to meet President Xi at the Group of Twenty (G20) summit, "The leaders of China and the U.S. maintain routine relations in various forms." The G20 summit will be held in mid-month in Bali, Indonesia.
However, when asked whether President Xi will attend the G20 summit, Spokesperson Zhao responded, "There is no announcement at this time," adding only, "Please continue to pay attention."
Earlier on the 9th (local time), President Biden expressed his intention to hold a face-to-face summit with President Xi in Bali, while also stating that they would discuss each other's 'red lines' regarding the Taiwan issue. Spokesperson Zhao said, "China's position toward the United States is consistent and clear," adding, "We strive to realize mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation with the U.S., while firmly safeguarding sovereignty, security, and development interests." He also emphasized, "The Taiwan issue is a core interest among China's core interests, the 'One China' principle is the political foundation of China-U.S. relations, and the three China-U.S. joint communiqu?s (including the establishment of diplomatic relations communiqu?) are the most important guardrails of bilateral relations."
