WHO: "15,000 Deaths in Europe This Summer Due to Heatwave"
[Asia Economy Reporter Byunghee Park] The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on the 7th (local time) that at least 15,000 people died from heat-related illnesses due to the heatwave that occurred in Europe this summer.
Hans Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe, stated in a press release that "the period from June to August this year was the hottest in Europe since weather records began."
He explained that the number of deaths from heat-related illnesses was approximately 4,500 in Germany, 4,000 in Spain, 3,200 in the United Kingdom, and 1,000 in Portugal.

Director Kluge pointed out, "Extreme heat can be even more dangerous for people suffering from heart disease, respiratory disorders, diabetes, and other conditions," adding, "Unless bold measures are taken to address climate change, extreme weather events will cause more illnesses and increase mortality over the coming decades."
