[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Hyun-ji] The People Power Party's Special Committee on the Itaewon Accident Investigation and Safety Measures completed the formation of subcommittees on the 7th and pledged to identify the causes of the Itaewon crowd crush disaster and prepare support measures for the victims. They plan to visit the accident site on the 9th.
Lee Man-hee, a member of the People Power Party and chair of the special committee, told reporters after the first meeting that “three standing subcommittees have been formed: the Truth Investigation Subcommittee, the Safety Measures Subcommittee, and the Public Safety Subcommittee.” The Truth Investigation Subcommittee includes lawmakers Park Hyung-soo, Park Sung-min, and Seo Beom-su; the Safety Measures Subcommittee includes lawmakers Cho Eun-hee and Jeong Hee-yong, as well as Je Jin-ju, an adjunct professor in the Department of Fire and Disaster Prevention at the University of Seoul; and the Public Safety Subcommittee includes lawmaker Choi Yeon-sook, Professor Shin Ui-jin from Yonsei University’s Department of Mental Health, and Kim Byung-min, a member of the party’s Emergency Response Committee.
Lee emphasized, “We will focus on thoroughly identifying the causes of the accident and preparing practical measures to support the victims and the injured.” He added, “We will also prepare support measures for frontline personnel such as medical staff, police officers, and firefighters who are working hard at the accident site.”

A site visit is also scheduled for the 9th. The targets include the Yongsan Police Station, the joint memorial altar at Noksapyeong Station, and the accident site. Regarding the visit to Yongsan Police Station, Lee explained, “Looking back on this disaster, it has become clear that the roles and systems of Yongsan Police Station and Yongsan District Office at the scene were very inadequate.” He added, “We will closely examine details related to the former police chief, who caused public outrage, and how the police station’s 112 emergency system operated.”
