[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Kim] Son Young-sik, CEO of Shinsegae who led the highest-ever performance of Shinsegae Department Store this year, has been promoted to president. An external expert will be newly recruited as the CEO of Shinsegae International. Kang Hee-seok, CEO leading Emart and SSG.com, has been retained. Son Jeong-hyun, CEO of Shinsegae I&C, has been appointed as the CEO of Starbucks Korea (currently SCK Company).
Shinsegae Group announced on the 27th the 2023 regular executive appointments based on these details. Shinsegae Group emphasized, "This personnel appointment strictly applied the principle of rewarding merit and punishing faults through rigorous evaluation, focusing on strengthening core competitiveness, preparing for the future, and nurturing talent," adding, "We conducted a strict meritocracy and competency-based personnel appointment."
In the department store division, Son Young-sik, CEO of Shinsegae who led the highest-ever performance this year, was promoted to president. An external expert will be newly recruited as the CEO of Shinsegae International. The existing CEO, Lee Gil-han, will serve as co-CEO.
Choi Moon-seok, CEO of Shinsegae Casa with abundant online business experience, has been appointed as the CEO of Shinsegae Live Shopping, accelerating future-oriented new business ventures. Kim Hong-geuk, a sales expert, has been appointed as the CEO of Shinsegae Casa. Kim Young-seop, MD expert and head of the product division at Shinsegae DF (executive director), has been appointed as the CEO of Shinsegae Simon, and Heo Byung-hoon, a finance background executive and head of Shinsegae support headquarters (vice president), has been appointed as the head of planning and strategy for the department store division.
The department store division has solidified its leadership lineup to maximize business expertise by sector, accelerate innovation and growth, and strengthen 'New Biz' to lead the future industrial ecosystem. At the same time, it has strengthened the recruitment of external talent and professional organizational systems. Talented next-generation leaders have been placed in key posts to enhance organizational capabilities and create a young and dynamic organization, while also reinforcing an organic synergy system throughout the division.
In the Emart division, Kang Hee-seok was retained as the head of Emart and SSG.com, a matter of keen interest. Vice President Jung Doo-young, a field expert, has been appointed as CEO of Shinsegae Construction, and Son Jeong-hyun, CEO of Shinsegae I&C, has been appointed to replace Song Ho-seop, who was appointed CEO of Starbucks Korea (currently SCK Company) in 2019. This is interpreted as taking responsibility for the recent controversy over carcinogen leakage in Starbucks promotional products. CEO Son Jeong-hyun will take on major responsibilities including organizational reform, digital innovation, and strengthening future competitiveness.
Hyung Tae-joon, vice president and head of Emart’s Sustainable Innovation Center, has been appointed as CEO of Shinsegae I&C. The Emart division focused on strengthening online competitiveness and online-offline synergy. Through new changes and innovations, it aims to reinforce organizational reform and place verified talent with proven performance and capabilities in the right positions to enhance specialization and fundamentals by organization.
