No Algal Toxins Found in Jinhae-gu Tap Water... Changwon City Epidemiological Investigation Results Announced
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Seryeong] On the 20th, the investigation results regarding the detection of algal toxins in tap water in Jinhae-gu, Changwon-si, Gyeongnam, raised by Changwon Water Life Citizens' Solidarity and others, were revealed to be 'no abnormalities.'
Changwon Special City, Gyeongnam, announced on the 26th that no algal toxins were detected in the tap water of Jinhae-gu.
The city's Waterworks Office stated that a joint epidemiological investigation was conducted with the Nakdong River Basin Environmental Office, the Korea Water Resources Corporation Nakdong River Water Supply Support Center, regarding the suspected green algae substances found in the tap water filters of houses in Jinhae-gu.
Microsystin 6 types and microscopic examinations were conducted on the complaint households in Jinhae-gu, nearby fire hydrants, raw water from Seokdong Water Purification Plant, and purified water, resulting in ▲no detection of algal toxins ▲no abnormalities found in microscopic examination.
According to the city, microsystin-RR 0.1217㎍/L was detected in the raw water from Seokdong, but the other five types were not detected.
All other areas showed no detection, and microscopic examination at 100 times magnification of tap water from each supply system of Seokdong Water Purification Plant also found no algae.
The presence of microsystin was analyzed by the Korea Water Resources Corporation Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam Headquarters Water Quality Testing Center using liquid chromatography (LC-MS/MS) method according to the Ministry of Environment notification.
Microsystin was not detected even when applying the instrument quantification limits of 0.026~0.099㎍/L.
Director Lee Jongdeok said, “Changwon City's water purification plants produce tap water through advanced water treatment,” adding, “Most algal toxins have been removed, so residents can use tap water with confidence.”
