[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyun-joo] Packs of stray dogs have been appearing one after another in regions such as Daegu and Jeju, increasing anxiety among local residents.
According to Dong-gu, Daegu City, on the 25th, multiple complaints were received from an apartment complex reporting threats from what are presumed to be packs of stray dogs and requesting their removal. The local government has identified at least 15 stray dogs, which are believed to inhabit nearby hills.
According to the Daegu Fire Headquarters, there have been a total of 820 dog capture dispatches in the Daegu area from the beginning of this year until last month. This averages about 91 cases per month, with the fire department dispatching roughly three times a day to capture dogs.
Three apartment complexes with a total of approximately 1,700 households are concentrated in the areas where the stray dogs have appeared. Dong-gu has posted warning banners about stray dog appearances centered around this area to ensure the safety of residents and children.
Additionally, Dong-gu, in cooperation with the Daegu Abandoned Animal Protection Center, has prepared and installed capture traps in the Dong-gu Innovation City area where complaints were received. However, since stray dogs have wide roaming ranges and are very cautious, it is expected to take some time before they voluntarily enter the capture traps. Stray dogs are not classified as harmful wild animals and cannot be captured using firearms; they are designated as subjects for rescue and protection under the Animal Protection Act.
Earlier this month in Jeju, livestock damage caused by stray dogs increased, causing hardship for residents. According to Jeju City on the 7th, livestock damage in Jeju City caused by stray dogs totaled 15 cases last month (79 chickens, 4 Korean cattle, 4 horses, 8 goats, and 32 ducks and geese).
