Dow Launches World's First Recyclable 'Self-Sealing Tire' Solution
Formation of a Thin Layer of Sealant Inside the Tire
Provides Excellent Sealing Performance in Case of Puncture
Enables Long-Distance Driving Without Air Pressure Loss
[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Seoyoon] Global materials science company Dow announced on the 26th that it has launched the world's first recyclable ‘silicone self-sealing tire’ solution.
The newly launched 'SILASTIC' SST-2650 Self-sealing Silicone (SILASTIC™ SST-2650 Self-sealing Silicone) meets the demands of self-sealing tire manufacturers for high performance and sustainability, while providing drivers and passengers with a lighter, safer, and more durable solution. This solution has been successfully applied to Bridgestone's recently launched recyclable tire sealant technology, B-SEALS.
As demand for material circularity and sustainability increases in the automotive industry, self-sealing tires have become a new solution enabling vehicle lightweighting. Dow is leading the chemical industry's transition toward a more sustainable future based on its innovative technology. Dow's new silicone sealant technology is designed to form a self-sealing layer inside the tire, providing excellent sealing performance in the event of a tire puncture, allowing long-distance driving without air pressure loss.
Unlike sealants currently used in the market, Dow's SILASTIC self-sealing silicone sealant can be separated from the tire once its lifespan ends, enabling recycling of both the tire and silicone. Additionally, there is no need to carry a spare tire in the vehicle, which improves driving range and fuel efficiency due to vehicle lightweighting and allows for more flexible car designs.
Existing self-sealing tires involved complex high-temperature molding processes and laser cleaning of the tire surface before coating, increasing energy consumption and environmental impact during production. However, tires using Dow's SILASTIC self-sealing silicone can be produced easily and quickly at room temperature with standard equipment without pre-cleaning, reducing manufacturing cycle time and processing costs.
Yeron Bellodow, Global Marketing Director of Consumer Solutions Mobility and Transportation at Dow, said, "As corporate and consumer interest in environmental protection grows, especially among premium brands, Dow recognized the need for higher-performance sustainable tire solutions and developed a new self-sealing silicone successfully applied to B-SEALS in collaboration with Bridgestone."
He added, "Through our brand slogan Seek Together spirit and commitment to sustainability, Dow plans to continue expanding possibilities related to self-sealing tire solutions with more innovative partners."
