Gwangyang Steelworks Supports Tugboats in Pohang, Sharing 'Warm Camaraderie'
Supporting Stable Operations with a Total of 18 Ladle Carriers at Pohang Steelworks
Comprehensive Cooperation from Gwangyang Steelworks, Group Companies, Partners, and Suppliers...
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] POSCO Gwangyang Steelworks (Director Lee Jin-su) announced that after successfully completing emergency repairs following flood damage caused by the flooding of Naengcheon Stream, it has supported stable steelmaking operations by providing an additional five hot metal transport cars to the Pohang Steelworks, which is currently operating normally.
From September 8, Gwangyang Steelworks transported 13 hot metal transport cars to Pohang Steelworks over the course of a week to support the normal operation of Pohang blast furnaces 2, 3, and 4.
However, as subsequent processes such as hot rolling and cold rolling were sequentially activated, additional transport cars became necessary. Accordingly, on September 28, Gwangyang Steelworks began support operations to transport five more hot metal transport cars.
For refractory lining construction, close cooperation among the Gwangyang Steelworks Refractory Group, POSCO Chemical, and related refractory partner companies and suppliers enabled the completion of refractory lining work on the 18th.
The hot metal transport cars with completed refractory lining were transported through comprehensive collaboration involving Gwangyang Steelworks Production Technology Department, Refractory Group, Central Repair Section, Safety and Disaster Prevention Group, POSCO Flow, partner company Korem, and transportation company Dongbang.
For safe transportation, a large-scale crane was used to load the hot metal transport cars onto unmanned special vehicles. The loaded transport cars were then moved to the Gwangyang Steelworks product pier and arrived at Pohang Port on the 19th.
Additionally, Gwangyang Steelworks established a system to replace the transported hot metal transport cars by repairing and utilizing five unused transport cars, ensuring no disruption to operations at Pohang Steelworks.
This additional support of hot metal transport cars is significant in that it contributed to the stable transport of hot metal at Pohang Steelworks, where steelmaking processes were restored and molten iron began running on rails again after flood damage.
Kim Geon-young, Deputy General Manager of the Production Technology Department at Gwangyang Steelworks, said, “Gwangyang Steelworks is doing its best by operating at maximum production capacity to minimize damage caused by Typhoon Hinnamnor. We will gladly do our utmost to support Pohang Steelworks by providing the needed hot metal transport cars and help our colleagues as much as possible.”
Meanwhile, Gwangyang Steelworks is actively working toward the rapid normalization of Pohang Steelworks and minimizing customer damage by supporting refractory supply, dispatching power and motor equipment experts, and engaging in recovery support efforts with active participation from its executives and employees.
