An ex-situ conservation institution is designated by the Ministry of Environment to systematically conserve and breed nationally protected species that are difficult to preserve in their natural habitats. Cheongju Zoo was designated as an ex-situ conservation institution in 2014, protecting and conserving 18 species of nationally protected animals, including cranes, leopard cats, and Asiatic black bears.
According to Hyosung Chemical on the 25th, at an event held the previous day, employees of the Oksan Plant carried out "animal behavior enrichment" activities to help the animals at the zoo engage in active feeding and diverse movements as they would in the wild.
For the Asiatic black bears, pumpkin treats filled with their favorite nuts and fruits were provided to stimulate their sense of smell and encourage increased activity and natural behaviors. For herbivores, balls woven from kudzu vines were made to promote play and active feeding behaviors.
These activities help improve the physical and psychological health of ex-situ protected species and enhance their potential for future breeding.
Lee Geonjong, CEO of Hyosung Chemical, stated, "Ecosystem restoration is an issue related to the survival of future generations. We will continue to take the lead in conserving and enhancing biodiversity."
