Why Tesla Lowered Its Sales Prices in China
Model 3 and Model Y prices lowered by 14,000 yuan and 28,000 yuan respectively
Price cuts continue from insurance support and zero down payment promotion
[Asia Economy Senior Reporter Cho Young-shin] Tesla has lowered its sales prices in China. This is the first time Tesla has reduced the price of electric vehicles this year.
According to Chinese media including the economic outlet Caijing on the 24th, Tesla China adjusted the price of the Model 3 to 265,900 yuan and the Model Y to 288,900 yuan. This represents a reduction of 14,000 yuan and 28,000 yuan respectively from the previous prices.
Additionally, the high-performance version of the Model 3 was lowered from 367,900 yuan to 349,900 yuan, a decrease of 18,000 yuan.
Last month, Tesla supported car insurance fees (8,000 yuan) as part of a promotion.
Regarding this price reduction, Tesla China stated that the sales prices were adjusted considering changes in production costs.
Caijing cited intensifying competition in the Chinese electric vehicle market as the background for the price cuts. The insurance fee support last month was also explained as part of the same context.
Up to September, 3.84 million electric vehicles have been sold in China. The dominant forecast is that this will far exceed the annual target of 5 million units.
With the Chinese government actively implementing policies such as extending the electric vehicle acquisition tax incentives to stimulate domestic demand, the demand for electric vehicles continues to grow. In fact, over 610,000 electric vehicles were sold in September alone, accounting for 31% of total vehicle sales.
As competition intensifies, Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers like BYD have launched zero down payment promotions, and Tesla has also offered a '0 yuan' down payment option.
Tesla China stated that conditions such as lower raw material prices have enabled the price reductions, but Chinese media analyze that Tesla has played the price reduction card as a competitive strategy. Tesla’s sales prices in the United States were not adjusted this time.
Caijing explained that for the Model 3, vehicles can be delivered approximately 4 to 8 weeks after ordering, and for the Model Y, about 1 to 4 weeks. This means the delivery time after ordering is not as long as expected.

The media also reported that as production capacity improves at factories in the United States and Germany, the volume of electric vehicles exported from the Chinese factory may decrease.
