[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Hee-jun] North Korea violated the September 19 inter-Korean military agreement once again by conducting artillery fire at sea after four days.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff announced on the 19th that from around 10 p.m. on the 18th, North Korea fired about 100 artillery rounds into the West Sea from the Jangsan Cape area in Hwanghae Province, and from 11 p.m., about 150 rounds into the East Sea from the Jangjeon area in Gangwon Province.
The impact points in the East and West Seas were within the maritime buffer zone north of the Northern Limit Line (NLL) as stipulated by the September 19 military agreement, and no shells landed within South Korean territorial waters.
The military authorities issued multiple warning communications to North Korea regarding the artillery fire, stating it was a "clear violation of the September 19 military agreement and demanding an immediate cessation of provocations."
A Joint Chiefs of Staff official said, "Artillery fire within the maritime buffer zones in the East and West Seas is a clear violation of the September 19 military agreement. North Korea's continued provocations undermine peace and stability not only on the Korean Peninsula but also in the international community. We sternly warn and strongly urge an immediate halt to these provocations."
