[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government is collaborating with the British public broadcaster BBC to showcase its excellence as a city of transportation innovation to the world.
On the 18th, Seoul announced that it is participating in the ‘The Way We Move’ series produced by BBC subsidiary BBC StoryWorks, initiated by the International Association of Public Transport (UITP), to highlight Seoul’s world-class public transportation infrastructure.
Through this video, which focuses on Seoul’s representative public transportation modes such as buses and subways, as well as its globally acclaimed transportation data services, viewers can see how Seoul’s transportation system supports citizens’ mobility using advanced technology.
This series, ‘The Way We Move,’ covers 20 leading transportation cities worldwide, including London, Singapore, and Barcelona. Seoul appears as an exemplary city that safely operated public transportation during the COVID-19 period when mobility was restricted, maintaining citizens’ economic and daily lives, and made leaps in advanced services through policy and infrastructure (infrastructure, systems) development.
In particular, the series highlights Seoul’s public transportation service level, which has long actively utilized technology across various service sectors including transportation, focusing on transportation issues to better meet citizens’ needs and provide inclusive transportation services by developing new technologies. Additionally, it focuses on how data is used to improve public transportation services, such as collecting citizens’ mobility data through transportation cards to improve congestion rates at bus stops and subway stations.
It also sheds light on Seoul’s efforts to make public transportation more convenient, such as low-floor buses, and features narration by Yang Won-seok, a chief operator of Seoul Subway Line 5, who was awarded ‘Best Broadcasting King’ in 2020 for his heartfelt subway announcements, emphasizing the citizen-first values of Seoul’s public transportation.
