Park Hong-geun "Pursuing Witness Adoption for Kakao Incident Responsible at National Assembly Audit... Preparing Legislative Measures"
"Maintaining Monopoly Position Without Considering Corresponding Responsibility"
"Government Must Prioritize Thorough Management and Preparedness"
[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Ju-yeon] On the 17th, Park Hong-geun, floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, stated regarding the 'Kakao outage' incident, "The core of this outage incident lies in the company’s failure to properly establish a backup system in order to reduce costs," and added, "We will promptly prepare legislative measures to ensure that we are not helpless in the face of digital platform disasters through this incident."
At the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly that morning, Floor Leader Park said, "Yesterday, members of the Democratic Party’s Science, Technology, Information and Broadcasting and Communications Committee visited the Pangyo site," and added, "Not only the Science, Technology, Information and Broadcasting and Communications Committee but also the Political Affairs Committee, the Industry, Trade, Small and Medium Enterprises Committee, and the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee will inspect the status of emergency data server establishment of online platform companies."
He also announced that those responsible for the Kakao outage incident will be summoned to the National Assembly audit session.
He said, "(Kakao) is a private company but already plays the role of a public platform. We must promptly identify the damage caused to the public by this accident and prepare countermeasures," and added, "We are pushing for the adoption of related responsible persons as witnesses in the audit."
Floor Leader Park pointed out that this incident is "the result of maintaining a monopolistic position in the market without considering the corresponding responsibilities."
