View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Hee-jun] Kim Sung, North Korea's ambassador to the United Nations, blamed the security crisis on the Korean Peninsula on the United States and demanded the cessation of the nuclear umbrella provision and the South Korea-US joint military exercises.
On the 11th (local time), Ambassador Kim stated at the 1st Committee meeting of the 77th UN General Assembly held at the UN Headquarters in New York, "The tyranny and arbitrariness of the United States, which seeks to maintain hegemony today, is the fundamental cause of the arms race occurring worldwide," adding, "The most evident signs of US military expansion can be found on the Korean Peninsula."
In his speech to the 1st Committee, which is responsible for disarmament and international security, he raised the level of criticism against the US by mentioning the deployment of cutting-edge strategic assets such as the B-52H, B-2A, and F-35A, the South Korea-US joint military exercise Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS), and the deployment of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan to the Korean Peninsula.
He argued that "(North Korea's) self-defensive armament in response to the US's heinous hostile acts" is an exercise of the right to self-defense guaranteed by the UN Charter and international law, and claimed, "The main mission of our self-defensive capabilities is to deter war by making the enemy abandon attempts at invasion and military attacks."
On the same day, he emphasized that for the realization of complete nuclear disarmament, the United States must take the lead in nuclear disarmament and refrain from providing the nuclear umbrella. For stability on the Korean Peninsula, the US should also stop arms build-up, the deployment of nuclear assets, and joint military exercises, and eradicate threats to North Korea by dismantling the UN Command.
The content of Ambassador Kim's speech is interpreted as an attempt to counter the US's moves to strengthen the nuclear umbrella in response to North Korea's recent consecutive ballistic missile provocations and the possibility of a 7th nuclear test.
