'Korean-style Address' Reflected in International Standards for Overseas Expansion
Ministry of the Interior and Safety to Submit 'Korean Address System' to International Standards Organization by the 25th... Supporting Domestic Companies' Overseas Expansion
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced that as South Korea's address system is set to be reflected in the international standard (ISO), it will promote the branding of the "Korean-style (K)-Address" and support domestic companies' expansion overseas.
On the 5th, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety stated that on the 6th, it will prepare a proposal for reflecting the Korean-style address system in the international standard (ISO) and hold a forum to gather opinions from related experts along with strategies to support domestic companies' overseas expansion. While most countries use traditional road name addresses, some countries only have addresses in cities or assign addresses only to buildings.
South Korea has had a "Korean-style address system" since fully adopting road name addresses in 2014, incorporating various advantages that enable more precise location indication than other countries. In particular, this year, the government announced through the "1st Basic Plan for Address Information Utilization" that it will expand the address system, which was previously only for buildings, to include objects and open spaces nationwide.
The Korean-style address reflected in the international standard (ISO) includes ?location indication for all spaces ?three-dimensional movement route guidance ?predictability of contact point locations. The Ministry of the Interior and Safety plans to submit the Korean-style address system to the relevant committee of the international standard organization (ISO TC211) by the 25th.
Going forward, the Ministry will brand the "Korean-style (K)-Address" and expand it not only to the international standard (ISO) but also to open spatial information consortia such as OGC. It will also establish standards related to address utilization by sector domestically.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety will continuously explain Korea's address system to countries around the world and support domestic companies' overseas expansion through this. It will promote the Korean-style (K)-Address to about 10 countries where the existing Korean-style administrative system has been introduced and discover partner countries.
