First Pilot Operation of Right-Turn Traffic Lights in Incheon... Four Intersections at Juan, Sinchon, and Dongsu
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] 'Right-turn traffic lights' will be pilot-operated at intersections in Incheon where the risk of traffic accidents involving right-turning vehicles is high.
The Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency announced on the 29th that from October to November this year, right-turn traffic lights will be pilot-operated for two months at four locations: Juan Intersection in Michuhol-gu, and Sinchon and Dongsu Intersections in Bupyeong-gu.
At locations where right-turn traffic lights are installed, right turns are not allowed on a red signal and can only be made when the green arrow signal is on. The police selected these installation sites considering pedestrian demand, child protection zones, and the risk of traffic accidents.
The police plan to analyze compliance rates with right-turn signals and the length of waiting queues of right-turning vehicles through the pilot operation to establish standards for the installation and operation of right-turn traffic lights.
An official from the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency said, "Once clear standards are established, we will gradually expand the installation of right-turn traffic lights," and added, "Drivers need to develop the habit of stopping temporarily when pedestrians are crossing or about to cross the crosswalk while making a right turn."
