Democratic Party: "President Yoon's New York Remarks Require Apology... Complete Overhaul of Foreign and Security Team Needed"
[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] On the 22nd, the Democratic Party of Korea demanded the dismissal of not only the presidential aides but also the Minister of Foreign Affairs in relation to remarks made by President Yoon Seok-yeol during his visit to the United States. The Democratic Party called for a "state audit."
Kim Eui-gyeom, spokesperson for the Democratic Party, stated in a commentary that he was "appalled" by President Yoon’s remarks made while leaving an event hosted by U.S. President Joe Biden, and "requested an official apology from President Yoon." Kim said, "Immediately dismiss Kim Seong-han, Director of the National Security Office, and Kim Tae-hyo, First Deputy Director, who have been advising the president in this manner," and added, "Replace Foreign Minister Park Jin as well." Furthermore, he said, "Following diplomatic blunders in London, the failure of the Korea-U.S. summit, submissive Korea-Japan diplomacy, and now even diplomatic insults, the National Assembly must immediately conduct a state audit regarding this diplomatic disaster."
President Yoon was captured on video walking out of the Global Fund 7th Replenishment Conference, saying to those around him, including Foreign Minister Park Jin, "If these XX in the National Assembly don’t approve it, what will Biden do, feeling embarrassed?"
Spokesperson Kim pointed out, "The main issue of this trip was the conclusion of the Korea-U.S. currency swap agreement. However, the meeting with President Biden lasted only 48 seconds," and criticized, "It was a 'diplomacy with empty hands' combined with 'diplomatic insults'." He continued, "It is shocking that the president representing the Republic of Korea used such street language at a gathering of world leaders."
