The event is an annual international exhibition and academic conference with the highest authority in the field of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), known as the 'Transportation Olympics' and 'Transportation Expo.' It was first held in Paris, France, in 1994, and was also held in Seoul in 1998 and Busan in 2010.
A consortium consisting of LG Uplus and transportation solution specialists Estraffic, Tracom, and Nzero was selected as the ITS construction contractor for Gangneung City in June last year.
At this year's ITS World Congress booth, LG Uplus is introducing ▲ Smart Intersections ▲ Smart Crosswalks ▲ Parking Lot Congestion Forecast System, which were built in Gangneung City. The Smart Intersection is a system that installs a traffic control system at major intersections in urban areas to collect traffic volume, waiting queues, and vehicle type passage data by section, and detect accidents. In particular, considering the regional characteristics of Gangneung, which has many roundabouts, the company added that a safety support system using LiDAR sensors was also established.
The Smart Crosswalk is a technology that helps safe crossing by installing a pedestrian detection system based on deep learning video recognition to protect vulnerable road users, and providing signal extension and warning sounds. The Parking Lot Congestion Forecast System guides drivers to available parking locations, the number of remaining parking spaces, and the status of nearby public parking lots in Gangneung City, reducing the effort of searching for parking spaces, the company explained.
Gangneung City was confirmed as the host city for the 2026 ITS World Congress on the 18th, defeating Taipei, Taiwan. South Korea will host this event for the third time. LG Uplus actively participated in the bidding committee organized by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and received high praise from the onsite inspection team during the local inspection of candidate cities held in July this year.
