Gwanak-gu Prepares Emergency Support Measures for Stalking Victims and Others in Accommodation
[Seoul District News] Gwanak-gu Establishes Practical Support System for Crime Victims' Mental Stability and Community Reintegration through Accommodation Support for Stalking, Dating Violence, and Domestic Violence Victims
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Jun-hee) is promoting a short-term accommodation support project to provide emergency assistance to female crime victims suffering from stalking, dating violence, domestic violence, and other issues.
The Gwanak Police Station had been providing short-term accommodation support limited to one day per person for female crime victims, but the district decided to take this step after sharing the need for a joint response to ensure women's safety.
The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family and Seoul City operate the "Women’s Emergency Call 1366 Emergency Shelter" for female victims of violence, but as it is a confidential facility, there are various restrictions that limit meeting the demands of victims.
Accordingly, the district decided to promote a short-term accommodation support project for emergency assistance to female victims of violent crimes, considering the severity of the crime and the risk of recurrence.
The short-term accommodation allows victims to quickly escape from the perpetrator and, considering the extent of the damage, risk of recurrence, and the period of restraining orders, they can stay for up to five days. This preemptively blocks secondary damage and greatly ensures the safety of victims as they continue their daily lives.
When crimes such as stalking, dating violence, or domestic violence are reported to the relevant police station, the police connect victims to short-term accommodations that are easy and quick to use, and the district pays for the accommodation fees.
In addition to accommodation support, the district has been making various efforts as a "Women-Friendly City" to ensure women can live safely from crime, aiming to ▲enhance women’s safety in the community ▲create a family-friendly environment ▲strengthen women’s capacity for community activities through projects such as safe alleyways, women’s safe return paths, and rental equipment for self-inspection of illegal filming cameras.
