Minister Jeong Hwang-geun: "Consensus Reached on Dairy System Reform Through Dairy Farmers' Grand Decision"
[Asia Economy Sejong=Reporter Kim Hyewon] Jeong Hwang-geun, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, said on the 15th, "Recently, the government’s proposed reform plan for the dairy industry system to promote the development of the dairy industry has gained consensus through the magnanimous decision of dairy farmers."
Minister Jeong attended the nationwide livestock cooperative chairpersons meeting held at the main auditorium of the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation headquarters in the afternoon and stated, "In the future, I will frequently meet and sincerely communicate with producer organizations, including the nationwide livestock cooperative chairpersons, to solve livestock issues and work together to find solutions."
The Dairy Promotion Board meeting to reform the milk price determination system, which has experienced difficulties, is scheduled to be held at 2 p.m. on the 16th. At this meeting, it is expected that the current 'raw milk production cost linkage system' will be revised to a 'differentiated pricing system by usage.'
This meeting was held for the first time in five years after being suspended due to livestock infectious diseases and COVID-19. Under the theme of 'Implementing Livestock Industry Together with the People,' 139 livestock cooperative chairpersons from across the country gathered in one place to reaffirm the role of Nonghyup in changing perceptions of the livestock industry and to pledge for the realization of sustainable livestock farming.
Minister Jeong emphasized, "Korea’s livestock industry has grown to account for about 40% (20.4 trillion won) of the total agricultural and forestry production value (52.2 trillion won as of 2020). It plays an important role in stably supplying food to the people and protecting food sovereignty. However, it is now time for structural improvement to become a sustainable livestock industry that earns the trust and love of the people."
