"To Raise Grades..." Engineering Student Who Assaulted Tutoring Student Sentenced to 1 Year 4 Months in First Trial
Court: "Victim Likely Experienced Severe Mental Shock"
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] A man in his 20s, a university student who repeatedly assaulted a minor tutoring student, was sentenced to prison in the first trial.
Judge Cho Sang-min of the Seoul Southern District Court Criminal Division 9 sentenced A (23) to 1 year and 4 months in prison on the 14th for violating the Special Act on the Punishment of Child Abuse Crimes (habitual injury). He was also ordered to complete 40 hours of a child abuse treatment program and was banned from working in child-related institutions for 3 years.
The court stated, "The assaults were repeated over a period of more than a month, with the number of assaults reaching 160," and added, "It was confirmed that he vented his anger directly by hitting the victim."
It further explained the sentencing reason, saying, "The mental shock suffered by the young victim, who was a first-year middle school student at the time, is believed to have been very severe."
A is accused of indiscriminately assaulting B, a middle school student receiving tutoring from him, at a study cafe in Yeongdeungpo-gu on June 13.
At the time of the incident, A reportedly punched B multiple times in the solar plexus and assaulted him dozens of times over about 50 minutes inside the cafe and on the stairs within the building.
The assault came to light the day after the incident when B’s parents noticed the abuse and reported it. After returning from tutoring, B suddenly said, "I want to quit," prompting his parents to confirm the abuse.
It was reported that B had numerous dark bruises all over his body, and he was diagnosed with injuries requiring two weeks of medical treatment. Additionally, he has been receiving psychiatric treatment due to anxiety symptoms following the assault.
A reportedly became enraged and assaulted B after B expressed a desire to quit tutoring, as A would no longer receive the tuition fees.
During the police investigation, it was found that A had habitually assaulted B before. To ensure B’s safety, the police imposed a restraining order against A and provided B with a smartwatch.
