"Special Operations Brigade Lacking Airborne Infiltration Assets... Unable to Infiltrate Independently"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] It has been confirmed that the Army Special Mission Brigade, known as the so-called 'Decapitation Unit,' which is tasked with infiltrating enemy territory in North Korea in emergencies, is unable to carry out infiltration missions on its own due to the lack of its own airborne infiltration assets.
According to data submitted by the Army Headquarters to Kim Ki-hyun, a member of the National Assembly Defense Committee from the People Power Party, on the 10th, the MH-47 and MH-60 helicopters currently held for infiltration operations under the Army's operational plan are U.S. military assets stationed in Korea, making it uncertain whether the South Korean military can deploy operations to infiltrate enemy territory at desired times.
Furthermore, the UH-60 special operations helicopters held by the Army for special missions lack missile warning systems, forward observation equipment (EO/IR), and satellite inertial navigation equipment (EGI), making it impossible to counter North Korea's air defense missile systems. Additionally, precise navigation during night and limited weather conditions is restricted, rendering decapitation operations fundamentally impossible.
Moreover, most of the UH-60 special operations helicopters possessed by our military are over 30 years old, with some repair parts discontinued, requiring long lead times for custom manufacturing. As a result, the average operational rate of these helicopters has decreased by more than 10% over the past five years.

Assemblyman Kim Ki-hyun stated, "The Special Mission Brigade is a strategic unit tasked with critical and core missions such as eliminating the enemy's WMDs (Weapons of Mass Destruction) and striking enemy leadership by infiltrating enemy territory in North Korea during emergencies." He added, "For rapid infiltration into enemy territory in emergencies, airborne infiltration assets are of utmost importance, and the fact that the Special Mission Brigade does not operate its own airborne infiltration assets means that the previous administration only verbally claimed to regain wartime operational control but actually did nothing."
